About the job

We are looking for a Patent Attorney for our office in Flemingsberg, Stockholm to manage a portfolio of inventions and patents in chemical engineering, process technology, mechanics and digital solutions (connected products, IOT, smart products, etc.). You will work closely with Alfa Laval's R&D Departments, guiding inventions from conception to product launch and throughout their lifecycle.



Key Responsibilities:

Prepare and align IP strategy work with Alfa Laval's Business Units.

*

Participate and counsel in R&D projects, R&D roadmaps, discuss with inventors regarding inventions and ideas, map and analyze FTO and evaluate invention reports on patentability and other aspects.

*

Investigate and analyze the right to the invention and make proposals to inventor remuneration.

*

Draft patent applications, prosecute patent applications directly or through external Patent agents versus patent offices.

*

Manage the patent portfolio in cooperation with Business Units and map against the product portfolio.

*

Review competitor monitoring and communicate to the R&D teams.

*

Prepare, file and handle patent oppositions cases.

*

Investigate and analyze patent infringement issues, handling in infringement processes, communicate with opponents, contacts with external lawyer, preparing material, reviewing agreements etc.

*

Handle outside inventors and inventions.


What you know

*

You hold an academic degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field.

*

You have several years of experience in patent work; experience with connected products, IoT, or smart products is a plus.

*

Experience in both private practice and in-house industry Patent Departments is an advantage.

*

Passing the European Patent Attorney exam is a merit.

*

You are fluent in English and possess strong communication skills.

*

Skills in other languages (e.g., Chinese, Italian, German, or French) are an advantage.

*

You are comfortable with international travel and building global contacts.

About the Role

Your mission
As the Head of Patents, you’re a crucial driving force behind our intellectual property strategy, as you with your skilled specialist function in collaboration with the Business Area General Counsel and the Division lead all work with IP matters within our business area segment. What you’ll do
- Advising on a broad range of legal matters with focus on product, tech and IP on a global level

- Draft, review and negotiate various commercial contracts including contracts and license agreements with suppliers of hardware, software and other goods and services

- Manage e-commerce related matters including consumer law, marketing law and e-commerce requirements

- Manage claims and litigations and support infringement actions

- Conduct legal research relating to various countries around the world

- Draft and hold internal presentations (for example, training managers in legal matters before negotiations)

- Develop the Legal department’s workflows and automate the drafting of contracts and legal documents

A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK:
As a Patent Attorney you will be working closely with the R&D teams in the areas of Connectivity and Electronics. The major part of the responsibility includes giving general advice on patent matters. You also manage, independently or through external consultants, activities either related to patent portfolio creation/management (like prior-art searches, patent drafting and prosecution) or to freedom-to-use analyses and risk assessment. The responsibility also includes handling/supporting oppositions and patent conflicts. You are also expected to contribute to the continuous improvement of the global IP function within Electrolux. Qualifications:

Briefly about the job
This is the best place to be for an IP professional, as you’ll be working with all patent matters, from inventions to enforcement. Acting through your team, and with stakeholders and internal and external collaborators, you take responsibility for technology related intellectual property (IP) matters in the relevant divisions. This includes creation and management of Technology IP portfolio, enforcement of Sandvik rights and managing risks related to 3rd party Technology IP.
You drive the creation and review of the divisions' Technology IP strategies in alignment with business priorities and Sandvik Technology IP Policy, and you ensure that protection of intellectual property receives proper attention, for example through patent boards and other decision-making forums. Handling post-grant procedures world-wide is part of the job, and so is managing the Technology IP financial information and reporting to the business. Your area of responsibility also covers reviewing terms and conditions for technology related intellectual property in agreements, such as joint development agreements.
You lead and coach your team in a motivating manner and create an empowering setting where everyone has the opportunity to grow. Competence development, recruitment and allocation of responsibility areas are important parts in your job, as you’re the one making sure we’re well equipped for future business needs.

We believe this is you
An experienced patent professional inspired by achieving results through good leadership and teamwork in an international environment and in challenging projects. You have at least ten years’ experience in patent matters and the professional qualifications of a patent attorney. Experience from supporting business, handling inventions, drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications, and dealing with oppositions and contentious matters is required. You have been successful in patent enforcement and leading such projects. It’s a plus if you have acted in a similar business to ours. Also, you have a master’s or a PhD in a relevant technical or scientific area such as electrical or mechanical engineering, materials science or chemistry. Of course, acting in a global environment calls for great English skills, verbally and in writing.

What you will do


• Mentor and teach patent attorney trainees in our award-winning 3-year trainee programme
• Identify and protect patentable inventions within foremost IoT. This will involve working in close cooperation with inventors within the R&D organizations within Ericsson
• Prosecute patent applications and patents in several jurisdictions worldwide
• Investigate and support licensing and sales opportunities for Ericsson’s patents
• Continuously improve the ways of working with the above responsibilities

• A Master or PhD degree in a relevant technical area such as electronic engineering, telecommunications, applied physics, computer science, and ICT

About the job

We are looking for a Patent Attorney for our office in Stockholm/Tumba to manage a portfolio of inventions and patents within chemical engineering, process technology, mechanics and/or digital solutions (connected products,  IOT, smart products etc). We work closely together with the R&D Departments of Alfa Laval from the first embryo of an invention to the finished product, and through the life of the product and patent.

The work includes evaluation of inventions as well as drafting and prosecuting patent applications. Managing patent portfolios of in-house clients and counselling on patent law and practice, freedom-to-operate analysis and due diligence are also major responsibilities, together with competitor patent surveillance and litigation. You will also be active in defending our patent rights and opposing those of our competitors, in particular before the European Patent Office. Another very important task is a continuous dialogue with the R&D departments in order to provide good advice on patent matters.

What you know
The Patent Attorney we are looking for should have a couple years’ experience of patent work and an academic degree within chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering physics or similar. Any experience of patenting connected products,  IOT, smart products is also preferable.

Patent experience from both private practice and an in-house industry Patent Department is an advantage but not a requirement. Having passed the European Patent Attorney exam is also a merit.

Travelling is a natural part of the work, as well as having many international contacts. You should have good communication skills and be able to use English fluently as a working language. Skills in other languages, e.g. Chinese, Italian, German or French is an advantage.

THE CANDIDATE
The successful candidate is likely to fulfil the following criteria:
• Possess significant experience in relevant areas of Intellectual Property rights, coupled with experience working in an international corporate environment;
• Extensive background (c.10+ years’ experience) within a leadership position;
• Qualification as a European or US Patent Attorney, or suitable qualification with sufficient immersion in the patent field;

Providing advice on validity, relevance and scope of patents.
Ensuring that R&D, Commercial and Legal management functions are fully aware of the significance of patent matters in their own areas of responsibility.
Managing patent portfolios of particular technologies or products.
Investigating and supporting licensing and sales opportunities for Ericsson’s patents,
Handling or supporting oppositions, appeals, invalidations and litigations.
Continuously improve the ways of working with the above responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience Requirements:
Some patent attorney experience and skills, particularly drafting and prosecution
Minimum of 3 years of technical working experience within the telecommunication area and especially in the Cloud and Radio areas, or in the Media coding or Security areas
Self-motivated and strong drive to accomplish tasks and become a world-class patent professional.
Ability to work effectively as an integral member of a team as well as to be able to make fast decisions on your own.
Master or PhD degree in a relevant technical area such as electronic engineering, applied physics, computer science, and ICT.
Good analytical and communication skills.
Very good language skills, written and spoken, in mother tongue.
Very good written and spoken English.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience Requirements:
Several years of patent attorney experience and skills
Worked as a qualified European Patent Attorney for some years.
Very good knowledge of technologies in the telecommunication area and especially in the Cloud and Radio areas, or in the Media coding or Security areas
Good language skills in French, and/or German is a plus

Om kunden:

RenFuel är ett svenskt innovationsföretag inom bioenergi med dedikerade forskare, medarbetare och ägare som med ett gediget kunnande om skogsindustri och grön kemi drivs av tanken att skapa förnybara drivmedel och material med hållbara metoder.

RenFuels affärside är att förädla lignininnehållande strömmar från massaindustrin till en bioolja som kan raffineras till förnybara bränslen eller användas i andra applikationer. Företaget bildades 2012 från upptäckter gjorda vid Uppsala universitet och har i dagsläget ett marknadsvärde på över 500 miljoner kronor. För två år sedan startade RenFuel ett uppskalningsprojekt där de arbetar för att ta fram ligninbaserade produkten Lignol i större skala. Detta är ett viktigt steg i utvecklingen av en kommande fullskalig kommersiell anläggning för framställning av deras produkter.

I dagsläget har företaget tre anställda vid pilotanläggningen i Bäckhammar för produktion av Lignol i pilot-skala. Vidare är de sex anställda vid forskningslabbet i Uppsala och tre personer i Stockholm.

RenFuels affärsidé ligger i framkant sett till innovation och nytänkande och företaget behöver växa internt och söker därmed en patentchef till Stockholmskontoret. RenFuels olika patent är basen för företagets marknadsvärdering och RenFuel arbetar kontinuerligt med att bygga nya patentfamiljer som skyddar varandra. Utifrån detta synsätt vill RenFuel erbjuda kommande samarbetspartners möjlighet att nyttja de olika patentskyddade produkterna i form av licenser.

Arbetsuppgifter:

Med anledning av att företag vill skydda sina olika intressen sett till deras olika patentfamiljer söker de nu en patentchef som kan ansvara för patentfamiljerna där det ingår att: utveckla en patentstrategi för olika patentfamiljer och patent, bevaka och utreda Freedom To Operate både offensivt och defensivt, svara och även skriva erinringar och invändningar och administrera patenten vid exempelvis nationell fas. Detta innebär att du sätter dig in i varje specifikt ärende och därmed ser vi att du besitter en god förståelse för den typ av kemi som kärnverksamheten syftar till. I dagsläget har RenFuel ett tjugotal patentet, rollen kan därför komma att innebära att du som patentchef ansöker om nya patent.

Du kommer att tillhöra organisationens ledningsgrupp och på så sätt kommer du axla en strategisk roll inom bolaget. RenFuel planerar att med tiden växa i form av fler bolag och därför ser vi att du delar ledningens vision om att grön kemi är lösningen för att erbjuda en global fordonsflotta med förnybara drivmedel.

Profil:

• Relevant akademisk utbildning, gärna civilingenjör med naturvetenskaplig bakgrund
• God förståelse för patentprocessen
• Fem års arbetslivserfarenhet av likande relevant arbete
• Erfarenhet av att arbeta med erinran och invändningar
• Goda kunskaper i tal och skrift på svenska och engelska

Meriterande:
• Erfarenhet av att arbeta på patentbyrå eller på patentverket
• Utbildning inom juridik
• Erfarenhet av förhandling
• Erfarenhet av att föra talan vid muntliga förhandlingar vid PRV
• Erfarenhet av att skriva sekretessavtal
• Erfarenhet ifrån en strategisk roll med tydligt affärsfokus

I och med att rollen innebär ett brett ansvarsområde ser vi att du med din gedigna erfarenhet besitter en vana av att arbeta självständigt med liknande arbetsuppgifter. Som patentchef är det viktigt att du känner ett stort ansvarstagande för ditt arbete samtidigt som du är noggrann med allt du tar dig an. Vidare ser vi att du som person är prestigelös och är beredd att vara flexibel i variationen av arbetsuppgifter.
