About Nordic Bio-Graphite:
Nordic Bio-Graphite helps industries transition toward a net-zero future by supplying CO2-neutral graphite. Graphite is the largest component in EV batteries and a critical material for green steel production. However, traditional production methods emit up to 20 kg of CO2 per kg of graphite. Based on a patent-pending solution from research at KTH Sweden, we have developed the first process to produce fossil-free graphite from bio-based materials at scale. Within four years, NBG aims to prevent over 200,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.


Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled R&D Process Engineer to join our team in advancing the sustainable production of bio-graphite. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in materials science, chemical engineering, or mechanical engineering, preferably with specialized experience in biomass thermal conversion processes, such as pyrolysis or gasification, and a deep understanding of material characterization and gas analysis. This role is central to scaling our proprietary bio-graphite production process and refining its environmental and operational efficiencies.


Key Responsibilities:
Design, plan, and conduct experiments on biochar thermal conversion to optimize pyrolysis and gasification processes within our production of bio-graphite.

The HYBRIT initiative was launched in 2016 by SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall with the aim of creating a fossil-free value chain from mine to fossil-free steel, with fossil-free pellets, fossil-free electricity and hydrogen. The aim of the initiative is to phase out the use of coal and to virtually eliminate carbon dioxide emissions in the steel industry, corresponding to about 10% of Sweden's total CO2 emissions.

Position
As Senior Engineer Modelling and Simulation you will work with the development of the Hybrit process for fossil free iron and steel production. Process development is ongoing at the pilot plant for direct reduction of iron in Luleå. At the same time, industrialization projects are ongoing to commercialize the process.
In a fast-paced and dynamic R&D environment you will apply your skills to the modelling of chemical and physical processes to simulate key steps in the hydrogen-based iron and steel production chain. Together with your colleagues in the modelling team you are expected to take lead in the planning and execution of activities such as development of models and modelling tools and apply them in simulation. You will work with data from lab experiments and pilot trials, producing validated models that form the basis for high fidelity simulations used in process design and scale-up. Other aspects of your work will include developing applications to support plant operations and efficiency. Simulators for operator training and tools for process monitoring and control are some examples. As part of the modelling team, you will collaborate actively with specialists from different areas such as research, process engineering, product development, digitalization, automation and IT. Working teams typically include Hybrit colleagues as well as external partners.

As a skilled Senior Process Engineer, the ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, and improving manufacturing processes to ensure maximum efficiency and productivity. The Senior Process Engineer will work collaboratively with the cross-functional teams to identify and resolve issues and implement improvements to processes.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Design, develop, and implement manufacturing processes, procedures, and systems to optimize productivity, quality, and safety.
Conduct feasibility studies, risk assessments, and cost-benefit analyses to evaluate process improvements and identify areas for cost savings.
Identify and troubleshoot process issues and implement corrective actions to improve efficiency and quality.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure project success, including engineers, technicians, and production staff.
Provide technical expertise and support to production teams to ensure that processes are executed effectively.
Develop and maintain process documentation, including standard operating procedures, work instructions, and training materials.
Analyze data to monitor process performance, identify trends, and make recommendations for improvement.
Support Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and pre commissioning activities of equipment and subsystems.
Review engineering and HSE documents to ensure that the commissioning & startup requirements are accounted for in the design.
Approve and assist in execution of equipment commissioning, qualification, and validation documentation, including FAT, SAT, SOPs.

A degree in chemical engineering, BSc, MSc or similar.

Hands-on experience with process design, implementation, and process optimization
Experience in a fast-growing environment, ideally in metal, recycling, mineral or hydrometallurgy processing.
Minimum of 5+ years of experience in process engineering, preferably in the manufacturing and chemical process industry.
Good problem-solving skills, understanding the importance of keeping set schedules and production goals.
Experience with risk assessments, gap assessments, change controls.
Ability to plan, develop and execute multiple projects under tight timelines.

Process Engineer Lead
We are seeking a Process Engineer to join our team in Stockholm, Sweden, to lead the development of our silicon production pilot. The role will involve providing technical lead for plasma processes and silicon production processes, as well as contributing to the improvement and optimization of these processes to implement the design phase and work closely with partners.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the construction of ground breaking silicon production via plasma reduction and refining processes together with best-in-class OEM partners.
Evaluate proposed processes from internal and external sources and make recommendations for improvements within safety guidelines.
Lead the design and implementation of process control and standardization measures.
Analyze data from internal and external processes to identify areas for improvement and new lines of enquiry for research.
Participate in simulations, tests, and other activities to support the manufacturing of hardware to achieve product requirements in the new plasma metallurgical process.

Qualifications:
Master’s degree or PhD in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Metallurgy, Material and Processes, or equivalent.
Ability to work with limited technical direction, attention to detail, and initiative to troubleshoot issues with processing, equipment, and alloying properties.
Familiarity with silicon production preferred (carbothermic reduction, Siemens process, FBR process, upgraded metallurgical refinement, Czochralski process, float zone refinement, silicon kerf recycling).
Familiarity with safety concerns associated with high temperature metallurgy and silicon production.
Knowledge of process development covering the range from process modeling/bench scale trials to commercial plant implementation and design.
English fluency
Open to work at pilot site a few days per week

Preferred Qualifications:
5+ years working knowledge and experience with multiple metallurgical processes (powder metallurgy, thermal spray coating, arc furnaces, or vacuum furnaces).
Familiarity with quality assurance paradigms appropriate to support R&D: DFM, FMEA, SPC, DOE, lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, RCA.
Another language is helpful but not essential.
Knowledge of materials such as silicon preferred. Knowledge of other materials also useful: aluminium, titanium, steel, copper, zinc, lead.

Du kommer att arbeta i uppdrag eller projekt, både stora och mindre och ansvara för att ta fram processdesign och kravspecifikationer för processinstallationer och processutrustningar, tex DR-processer, vätgas, ugnar och dylikt. Du kommer även att arbeta med koncept- och förstudier inom området. Både hydrometallurgi, pyrometallurgi och mineralteknik är i fokus.
