About Nordic Bio-Graphite:
Nordic Bio-Graphite helps industries transition toward a net-zero future by supplying CO2-neutral graphite. Graphite is the largest component in EV batteries and a critical material for green steel production. However, traditional production methods emit up to 20 kg of CO2 per kg of graphite. Based on a patent-pending solution from research at KTH Sweden, we have developed the first process to produce fossil-free graphite from bio-based materials at scale. Within four years, NBG aims to prevent over 200,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled R&D Process Engineer to join our team in advancing the sustainable production of bio-graphite. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in materials science, chemical engineering, or mechanical engineering, preferably with specialized experience in biomass thermal conversion processes, such as pyrolysis or gasification, and a deep understanding of material characterization and gas analysis. This role is central to scaling our proprietary bio-graphite production process and refining its environmental and operational efficiencies.

Key Responsibilities:
Design, plan, and conduct experiments on biochar thermal conversion to optimize pyrolysis and gasification processes within our production of bio-graphite.
Conduct comprehensive material characterization and gas analysis to assess conversion efficiency, material properties, and quality of bio-graphite.
Collaborate closely with our research team to refine the catalytic process for transforming biochar into high-purity, carbon-negative graphite suitable for battery and industrial applications.
Utilize ASPEN or similar process modeling software for process optimization and scale-up studies, developing models to predict performance and validate process designs.
Lead the integration of process improvements from experimental findings to pre-pilot and pilot plant setups.
Maintain accurate records and documentation of experimental protocols, results, and analysis for reporting and patent application support.

Qualifications:
Master’s or Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
Demonstrated experience with biomass thermal conversion processes such as pyrolysis, gasification, or similar methodologies, ideally in an industrial R&D setting.
Expertise in materials characterization techniques (e.g., BET, XRD, SEM) and gas analysis.
Knowledge of process modeling using ASPEN or similar software is a strong advantage.
Strong analytical skills with a data-driven approach to process improvement.
Excellent collaboration and communication skills for cross-functional work with internal teams and external partners.

Why Join Us?
At Nordic Bio-Graphite, you will be a crucial player in an early startup shaping the future of sustainable materials in high-impact industries. You will contribute to critical advancements in our green graphite production technology, working alongside industry-leading researchers and engineers. This role offers a unique opportunity to apply your expertise to a mission-driven company that addresses the global demand for sustainable, fossil-free graphite solutions. Visa mindre

Northvolt makes green batteries for a blue planet. Affordable cells and high-quality battery systems. All manufactured with a record-low carbon footprint. Purposely built to provide Europe with the opportunity to switch to renewable energy – efficiently and entirely.

To accomplish this, we do things differently. We design, manufacture, and recycle everything under one roof. We even build our own factories. All this is incredibly challenging and requires us to think in unconventional ways. We’re constantly experimenting, learning and adapting to make batteries so great – they will one day make oil history.

Northvolt is growing fast. We’re staffing our international office in Stockholm, our R&D facility, Northvolt Labs, in Västerås, as well as our Gdansk facility for production of battery systems. We're also hiring for our two gigafactories: Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå, Sweden, and Northvolt Zwei in Salzgitter, Germany. We want to work with smart individuals from all disciplines.
