We are seeking a Senior Fellow in sustainable finance to strengthen our work on climate and development financing, particularly around climate investment for cities, investment research and analysis, and mapping financial mechanisms.
The role will contribute to the Viable Cities program in Sweden, supporting Swedish and European cities in mobilizing adequate and effective finance. It also includes strategic engagement in program development, mentoring junior staff and contributing to the overall direction of SEI’s international work in this field.
The Senior Fellow will work within the national Viable Cities program hosted by the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), and SEI’s Finance for Sustainable Development program.
Key responsibilities
Stakeholder and network management
Facilitate knowledge exchange between researchers, policymakers and financial institutions.
Collaborate with municipalities and national agencies in Viable Cities to align and enhance public funding streams for cities’ climate transitions.

Advisory and capacity development
Support capacity-building for cities, investors and public agencies to strengthen climate-investment financing.
Help cities develop robust, actionable climate investment plans and financing options.
Conduct in-depth mapping and engagement of investors for climate projects.
Provide expert input on policy and regulatory frameworks.

Strategy and program development
Work with the Program Lead and Head of Division to shape the strategy and direction of SEI’s Finance for Sustainable Development program.
Identify and develop new partnerships and funding opportunities.
Mentor and guide junior staff, offering expertise and professional networks.
Represent SEI in national and international policy dialogues, conferences and expert panels on sustainable finance.



Who you are
The position will require active engagement with SEI’s broader research teams, partner organizations, and external stakeholders, including city governments, financial institutions, and policymakers. To succeed in this role you excel at building and maintaining partnerships across sectors and thrive in collaborative, cross-cultural settings. You are proactive, adaptable to changing contexts, and capable of managing complex stakeholder relations.
Required qualifications and experience
Advanced degree in finance, economics, business administration, public policy or a related field.
At least 10 years of professional experience in relevant areas.
In-depth knowledge of European and Swedish financial instruments, funding mechanisms and private-sector investment trends.
Proven experience engaging with investors and other climate finance actors.
Expertise in financial strategies for sustainability.
Strong analytical and research skills, with a record of influential publications.
Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder-engagement skills.
Fluency in Swedish and English (written and spoken).

The Environmental Policy and Strategy (EPS) team at SEI specializes in complex stakeholder management, with a focus on transitional countries and regions. The team supports governments in demand-driven sustainable, environmental and climate transitions in the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Serbia) and the Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries (Armenia, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine). Our activities include developing and implementing comprehensive environmental strategies and action plans, designing and supporting national sustainability transition efforts, assessing national environmental, energy and climate sectoral policies, and building capacity to support EU accession processes in various candidate and potential candidate countries.
The role
We are seeking an experienced waste, chemicals and circular economy (CE) expert to join SEI HQ in Stockholm. The successful candidate will lead, and support projects focused on waste and chemicals management and CE in the Western Balkans and EaP countries. For example, in the Green Agenda project?, the expert will provide guidance on preparing green transition roadmaps and developing projects within industry and zero-pollution thematic areas. You will work within the EPS team to enhance our project portfolio and provide technical expertise to national governments.
Key duties and responsibilities
Expertise delivery:
Provide specialized knowledge on EU waste and chemicals management systems, including CE principles and the “waste hierarchy.”
Contribute to drafting policy documents, reports and assessments related to waste and chemicals management and CE in target regions.
Conduct research using the latest data, case studies and practices in waste and chemicals management and CE.
Analyse data and trends related to sustainable and green transitions in EaP and Western Balkan countries.
Supporting ongoing EPS team projects (e.g. Green Agenda?, BiH Sutra?).



Project and business development:
Identify new project opportunities and potential funding sources.
Lead the preparation of proposals and technical documentation.
Manage and lead projects related to waste and CE within the EPS team.

Networking and communication:
Build and maintain partnerships with stakeholders in waste and chemicals management, CE, zero-pollution and green transition sectors.
Provide the EPS team with updates on EU waste and CE policies, as well as developments in EU enlargement policy.

Team collaboration:
Support the EPS team’s efforts to address transitional needs in EaP and Western Balkan countries.
Contribute to the implementation of the EPS strategy and action plans.

Who you are
You are a seasoned professional with a proven track record of delivering high-quality expertise in waste management and CE, particularly within the EU context and preferably in the EaP and Western Balkan regions. You are passionate about driving sustainable development through expert-led projects and policy influence.
Required qualifications, skills and experience:
A relevant university degree (e.g. environmental studies, economics, sustainability, chemicals management).
A minimum of eight years of experience in waste and or chemicals policy, management and CE.
In-depth knowledge of the EU waste and chemicals management hierarchy and regulatory frameworks.
Strong understanding of the EU Green Deal and its national-level impacts.
Experience with the implementation of the EU acquis in EaP or Western Balkan countries.
Proven experience in stakeholder engagement and policy dialogue facilitation.
Experience working with government officials
Expertise in designing and facilitating workshops, training sessions and seminars.
Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
Experience working in multidisciplinary teams.

We are recruiting a Philanthropic Fundraising Manager who will create a philanthropic fundraising strategy, roadmap and model for SEI covering income from trusts and foundations. Over time, we envisage this expanding to cover corporate donors and individual major gifts. These will be key components in the institute’s overall funding strategy, which also covers a strong base of government, institutional and research funding. As SEI now seeks to diversify its funding and attract more support from philanthropy, the Philanthropic Fundraising Manager will play a critical role in the development of the organization over the coming years by expanding fundraising capacities at the institute, leveraging SEI’s unique global network of centres.
As Philanthropic Fundraising Manager, you will progressively be responsible for programmatic fundraising with philanthropic funders and relationship management and communication with philanthropies. You will also collaborate with colleagues across the organization to leverage existing organizational relationships as well as to identify potential sources of new philanthropic support.
The Philanthropic Fundraising Manager and the existing Grants and Funding Manager, who is responsible for research and institutional funding, form the core of the fundraising team at SEI. Both positions report to the Operations Director and will work closely together. They will also partner with the Research Director and other relevant directors and functions to develop the organizational culture and capacity for teams to cultivate, solicit and manage funding. This will include offering guidance and support to increase individuals’ confidence and impact in conversations with prospects and donors.
Key duties and responsibilities:
The Philanthropic Fundraising Manager will oversee the development of the following functional areas over time. To begin, priority will be given to the development of a fundraising strategy and operations, the development of a philanthropic funders’ relations program, and fundraising support to a small number of priority areas.
Fundraising strategy & operations
Partner with the Grants and Funding Manager, project and programme leaders as well as senior management to define SEI’s fundraising opportunities as related to the organization’s strategic priorities, and translate these into a fundraising strategy, with clear goals that are monitored and acted upon.
Enable implementation of the fundraising strategy by supporting and enabling relevant colleagues and managers to identify, approach and secure funding from trusts and foundations.

Create and manage cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for the most promising trust and foundation prospects, partnering with SEI leadership and/or key staff members as relevant.

Donor communications
Oversee creation and implementation of a segmented donor communications strategy, inclusive of stewardship materials that compellingly illustrate the impact and outcomes of SEI’s work.

Over time and with the appropriate resources, we envisage that the Philanthropic Fundraising Manager will also assume responsibility for corporate donors and individual major gifts.

SEI HQ is looking for a Research Associate to undertake doctoral studies in international relations in collaboration with Stockholm University. The research will focus on evaluating transformative urban climate and energy finance initiatives.
The role
As a doctoral student, you will participate in the project “Evaluating transformative energy governance in an urban context,” aimed at enhancing cities’ capacity to govern transformative change towards sustainable and climate-neutral energy systems. The interdisciplinary project involves three doctoral students: one at Lund University (IIIEE), one at Linköping University and one at Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). Funded by the Swedish Energy Agency, the doctoral students will join the national interdisciplinary graduate school in energy systems.
The project focuses on evaluating transformative policy tools for climate-neutral energy systems and developing an interdisciplinary evaluation framework for building strategies of continuous, learning-oriented evaluation. This framework will help improve the effectiveness of new transformative policy instruments. The doctoral student at SEI will focus on evaluating transformative finance efforts at the city level, while others will focus on urban experimentation and system demonstrations (Linköping University) and public procurement for system innovation (Lund University).

The Environmental Policy and Strategy (EPS) team at SEI specializes in complex stakeholder management, with a focus on transitional countries and regions. The role

SEI HQ is seeking a Research Associate to undertake doctoral studies in economics or political science focused on transformative urban climate and energy finance.
As a doctoral student, you will participate in the project “Evaluating transformative energy governance in an urban context,” aimed at enhancing cities’ capacity to govern transformative change towards sustainable and climate-neutral energy systems. The interdisciplinary project involves three doctoral students: one at Lund University, one at the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE), one at Linköping University and one at Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). The role
We are seeking a Communications and Impact Officer to drive communications and impact across research projects, initiatives and strategic policy engagement areas from our head office in Stockholm. The successful candidate will possess a background in communications or journalism, and will be responsible for leading communications and impact work across several of SEI’s research projects. This role also involves liaising with internal and external stakeholders to support the achievement of SEI’s strategy.

The project
One of your key responsibilities will be to assume the role of thematic coordinator for three teams (Industry, Zero-pollution and Farm to Fork) in the Green Agenda for Armenia, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine (GA GUMA) project. The project brings together different government actors from Armenia, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine to deliver policy changes, make economies greener, improve environmental governance, stimulate investment, uptake innovative technologies and create green jobs. The main objective of the project is to assist Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova and Armenia in reaching climate neutrality goals through green transition. Within the framework of the project, national roadmaps for achieving climate neutrality will be developed, based on European Green Deal.
The GA GUMA project will cover 8 key and 5 cross-cutting thematic areas, totaling 13 (following European Green Deal approach). The key areas include climate, energy, building and renovation, smart mobility, mobilizing industry for a clean and circular economy, zero pollution, farm to fork and biodiversity, along with 5 cross-cutting areas – finance for transition, digitalization, EU acquis, just transition, and research and innovation.
The teams in the GUMA project will comprise Team Leads, team/thematic coordinators, and international and national experts. They will drive the development of the above-mentioned project outputs in their respective areas.
Key duties and responsibilities
Provide overall support to Team Leads for the timely delivery of project outputs.
Coordinate internal communication and logistics within the teams.
Track and monitor the content of the team’s written materials, ensuring alignment with overall project guidance and work plans.

SEI HQ is looking for an experienced Research Fellow to support a portfolio of projects related to understanding the impacts of sustainability transitions and technologies. In particular, we are looking for an expert who can provide substantive advice, technical expertise, and knowledge in impact assessments and understanding societal consequences of transition processes.

The role
As a Research Fellow, you will play a vital role in the development of C-sink, a Horizon Europe project. C-sink aims to lay the foundation for a standardized, transparent European Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) market, bolstered by reliable accounting methodologies and effective policy strategies. The project will involve thorough scientific assessments of various CDR approaches, examining their CO2 uptake potential, safety, and long-term impacts.
C-SINK will evaluate the feasibility, legality, political, social, economic and environmental aspects of numerous emerging and established nature-based and engineered CDR methods, as well as their synergies when combined. The project will also explore the necessary steps for their rapid, large-scale, effective and unbiased deployment, including policy and MRV development recommendations.
Within this project, SEI leads the work package focusing on the Social, Environmental, and Total Economic Value Assessment of the different CDR technologies. SEI will primarily oversee the methodological design of the integrated assessment, centring on the social impact and acceptability of these technologies across various case study locations. This will involve designing a survey to analyze the intended and unintended consequences on people and conducting qualitative research to uncover the subtle differences in social acceptability.
SEI will also spearhead a deliverable that synthesizes findings from social impact, environmental, and economic and technical studies. Using multi-criteria decision-making analysis, the CDR technologies will be compared from social, economic, and environmental perspectives. This process includes modelling simplified comparable scenarios for different CDR approaches, both in selected C-SINK pilot use cases (at least three) and within a generalized framework for future applications. The scenarios will consider site-specific characteristics, social impact analysis, environmental analysis, ecosystem services analysis and techno-economic analysis, as well as timing criteria (i.e., different outcomes depending on time). The alternative scenarios will highlight the benefits and potential drawbacks of each option, ultimately supporting and illustrating decisions regarding CDR solutions or suggesting their combination.
You will also be expected to network and fundraise in the future, bringing new projects and partnership opportunities to SEI.

We are recruiting a new researcher to work with the low carbon industrial transition and transport electrification. The researcher will be part of SEI’s growing Energy and Industry Transitions (EIT) team as well as the Secretariat for the Leadership Group for Industrial Transition (LeadIT).
The successful candidate will initially focus on the following two projects on equal terms:
The first project focuses on analysing charging infrastructure demand developments for different user groups and transport market segments. The researcher is expected to contribute to the EIT team’s ongoing research work on accelerating the transition to electrified transport, by using analytical skills for interpreting results and engaging with stakeholders.
The second project is work within the SEI-hosted LeadIT Secretariat. LeadIT gathers countries and companies that are committed to reaching net-zero carbon emissions from industry by 2050. The Secretariat work covers a range of hard-to-abate industries, focusing on the steel and cement industries in particular, and the work is often done in close collaboration with other international institutions, such as UN entities and the G20 organization.
The role
The work includes carrying out research and translating research to policy-relevant insights.
In the charging infrastructure project, this means carrying out a synthesis of best available evidence from Swedish and international studies. The researcher will have a central role in reporting project insights to decision-makers regarding how charging infrastructure planning can be improved.
In LeadIT, the role includes working closely with the other LeadIT Secretariat members on a variety of tasks: for example, industry roadmaps and formulating briefs and policy recommendations on issues at the frontier of the global industrial green transition, as well as international work in the field.
Key duties and responsibilities include:
Review, analyse and synthesize evidence on charging infrastructure needs across different vehicle and user groups for accelerating transport electrification.
Formulate briefs and policy recommendations on transport electrification, industrial green transition, or road maps for the green transition.
Develop and contribute policy knowledgesuch as tracking regulatory initiatives in the EU that influence the industrial transition, sharing this with the LeadIT Secretariat team and developing LeadIT’s contributions to the members.
Together with other team members of the LeadIT Secretariat, formulate policy advice for the hard-to-abate industry sectors, from a holistic and multisectoral viewpoint.
Engage with stakeholders and contribute to identifying new research areas to further explore energy system decarbonization, industry transition, and equitable access to infrastructure.

Who you are
The ideal candidate has a couple of years’ experience either in research or policymaking, and an education or otherwise tangible experience of working with low carbon transitions. The work requires both technical and/or policy know-how and interest. Experience of heavy industry sectors and transport electrification is desirable. Flexibility is needed, as is a keen interest in the ongoing energy transition across sectors that need to decarbonize.

The candidate will primarily focus on the CrisAct project, which aims to provide a comprehensive science-based framework for monitoring and managing hydroclimatic-driven natural hazard crisis and disaster responses in order to protect society against droughts, floods, and heat waves, occurring separately or in combination.
The research results will provide essential scientific underpinning and support for decision-making on management of such disasters and mitigation of their risks, focussing on exploring the potential of various adaptive solutions/actions in Sweden. The project results will form a basis for suggesting preparatory, preventive and responsive solutions to their (co-) occurrences, considering the Swedish context for such hydro-climatic risk mitigation and crisis management. Project outcomes will be communicated with stakeholders to ensure application of developed tools and action road map.
Key duties and responsibilities
The appointee will develop an innovative online system for monitoring and risk quantification of droughts, floods, heat waves and their spatiotemporal relationships across Sweden. System development will be combined with consideration and assessment of opportunities for climate-change adaptation and disaster risk mitigation in a preventive and responsive crisis management framework. The monitoring system will build on advancing scientific understanding of current conditions and future projections of drought, flood and heat wave (co-)occurrence, along with societal vulnerability to these often compound hazards.

The Grants and Funding Manager role is a new position at SEI HQ. The successful candidate will play an integral part in our ongoing fundraising efforts, working closely with HQ line management, the finance department and senior management to enhance our professional grants and funding management procedures and ensure joint ownership and an overview of the project portfolio from pipeline to closure.
The main part of the role is to develop and maintain appropriate processes for research project proposals at SEI HQ from pipeline to closure. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining decision support for resource planning in projects and ensuring adequate quality assurance procedures related to the full project cycle are in place and upheld. You will ensure updated information on incoming and ongoing projects is available and regularly used to enable a good overview of the implementation status of the portfolio and inform decisions on forward planning. In this part of the job, you will work closely with HQ line management and the finance department. You will chair the weekly meetings of the HQ Operations Committee responsible for the operational day to day management of SEI HQ.
In addition, you will lead work to increase competence for proposal writing at SEI globally. The role
We’re looking for a creative and proactive Graphic Designer to show our work in new ways and increase engagement, clarity and visibility for the work we do.
We know our audience loves to see our work presented visually, so this important role will fill our need to enhance the way we communicate. You will explore possibilities for visual communication, collaborate with colleagues to develop ideas and execute those ideas.
You will work in projects and implement and develop SEI’s visual communications in close cooperation with our other Graphic Designer and the Corporate Communications team. You and your colleague will build capacity together and inspire colleagues across the global communication team.
This role is a study leave cover for 12 months on 50%, with the potential of increasing up to 100% during peak periods. We are ideally looking for someone with flexibility to increase their hours when there is a need.
Key duties and responsibilities
Design visual assets and templates, and lay out an array of communications assets for web, print and social media
Collaborate with researchers, graphic designer and communicators to find opportunities for visual storytelling
Clarify and discuss early ideas, with sketches or mock-ups
Support development and implementation of brand guidelines for SEI and projects
Support training and building capacity to increase the understanding and use of graphic design within the organization
Create infographics, charts and other data visualization assets. Help us find ways to communicate the best parts of our data (but not doing the data crunching itself).

Formal qualifications and knowledge
Required
Two years of experience in a graphic design role
Degree in graphic design/visual communication or equivalent working experience
Knowledge of Adobe CC software including InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere and Acrobat, with the ability to expand one own’s knowledge as new needs arise
Precise knowledge of the craft of graphic design, typography and branding
Experience with design and production of both printed and digital materials
Comfortable working in English.

Additional information

Key duties and responsibilities

Supporting AgriFoSe2030 projects in evaluating their progress and help them apply existing MEL tools.
Organising, as well as supporting the design and implementation of project workshops, and other events, in-person and online.

The role
The Research Fellow will play an important role in SEI’s research and policy engagement. This will initially focus SEI’s research related to policy areas of the European Green Deal, geopolitics and Agenda 2030.
Within EU policy, the Research Fellow will lead SEI’s engagement with the Swedish Government on European Union-related policy issues. As Sweden takes the Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2023, SEI has established policy dialogues with government and knowledge partners in Sweden, Brussels and other EU member states. SEI will host a conference in spring 2023, convening decision-makers and analysts from policy, business and research across Europe to debate the key sustainability issues at stake for EU policy. The conference and our EU policy engagement is supported by evidence generated by a diverse portfolio of projects and initiatives related to industry and energy transitions, sustainable trade, climate change adaptation, biodiversity and global environmental pressures from EU consumption. An important part of the role is convening SEI researchers and relevant policy and industry decisions makers, multilateral processes and networks among like-minded organizations.
The Research Fellow will further play a key role in the synthesis and outreach of research findings emerging from the interdisciplinary research programme, Mistra Geopolitics. As the programme wraps up it second phase in 2024, this includes leading a group of researchers to produce research syntheses, writing relevant reports and papers, as well as facilitating scenario workshops with stakeholders and partners of the programme. The Research Fellow will also contribute research and analysis on Swedish policy responses to the war on Ukraine with regards to natural resource management and their impacts on Sustainable Development Goals progress.
The Research Fellow will join the Global Goals and Systems team, a team of researchers based at SEI HQ thematically focused on systems thinking in decision-making, policy development and action on global sustainable development goals, and will actively contribute to the teams research portfolio and engagements.
Key duties and responsibilities
Lead SEI’s engagement with the Swedish Government on EU-related policy issues and their implementation in Sweden and other EU member states
Convene researchers and practitioners on critical issues for EU policy, drawing from the diverse portfolio of SEI projects and initiatives
Lead development of a conference programme, engaging with partners, funders and speakers, and provide guidance to communications officers and event coordinators
Conduct research and provide expert advice on EU policy and relevant multilateral processes
Conduct research and analysis on strategic foresight and emerging technologies, develop and calibrate tools related to Sustainable Development Goals and lead data collection
Lead production of research syntheses, including report and paper writing
Facilitate scenario workshops and stakeholder engagement
Represent SEI as a spokesperson in public debates on areas of research and policy expertise
Contribute to the development, fundraising and delivery of the Global Goals and System team’s project portfolio of research and engagement work
Manage projects in line with SEI’s project model with colleagues at SEI and other partner organizations
Engage in relevant policy networks within Sweden, Europe and internationally, including with both private and public actors.

Who you are
We are looking for a person with a passion for policy in the context of the environment, climate change, geopolitics, Agenda 2030 and sustainability transitions. This may be from a range of expertise areas such as international relations, political science, geography, economics, international law, science, technology and innovation, and sustainable development. Applicants with either a research or policy background are encouraged to apply.
In addition, the successful candidate(s) will also have experience of managing and coordinating complex multi-partner projects, including budget management and financial reporting, team leadership and funder and consortium relations. The role

Trase (Transparency for Sustainable Economies) is a pioneering sustainability data and intelligence initiative that reveals the connections between consumers, producers and investors, as well as the environmental and social impacts linked to global supply chains. The Trase approach draws on vast sets of production, trade, customs and financial data, for the first time laying bare the flows of globally traded commodities such as palm oil, soya and beef at scale, as well as the flows of capital used to finance this trade. Trase is a direct response to the ambitious commitments made by leaders across sectors to achieve deforestation-free supply chains and the urgent need this creates for a breakthrough in assessing and monitoring sustainability performance. Trase is jointly led by SEI and Global Canopy with many additional partners and close collaborators. Research Fellow: Supply chain emissions accounting (Trase)
Trase (Transparency for Sustainable Economies) is a pioneering sustainability data and intelligence initiative that reveals the connections between consumers, producers and investors, as well as the environmental and social impacts linked to global supply chains.
Trase is jointly led by SEI and Global Canopy with many additional partners and close collaborators. The Trase team is made up of over 40 individuals located in nine countries, brought together by enthusiasm, curiosity and drive.
The role
SEI HQ is recruiting a highly motivated Research Fellow to lead an emerging area of research and impact within the Trase initiative on greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) linked to commodity supply chains. The food system contributes to 34% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and is increasing. A total of 71% of total emissions from the food system, or 24% of all anthropogenic emissions, are due to the combination of land-use and land-use change (LULUC) and production practices, with tropical deforestation from agricultural expansion being one of the largest contributors.
The successful applicant will have a strong background in research on emissions from the agricultural sector, including livestock and/or supply chain emissions accounting, preferably regarding agricultural commodities in the tropics, as well as proven experience of ensuring that their research is policy-relevant and actionable, whether by public or private sector organizations, including the financial industry.
You will be part of a leading, multinational, multidisciplinary and multilingual team of experts, working across the Trase initiative while also delivering on an exciting and fun project! Advance methods to account for GHG emissions from the agricultural sector, including on-farm practices and deforestation and ecosystem conversion for soy, pasture, cocoa and palm land uses and derived commodities and products, in collaboration with colleagues in the Trase team and partners
Advance methods to account for GHG emissions in downstream stages of commodity transport and manufacturing in collaboration with colleagues in the Trase team and partners
Support Trase to develop data products that can be used in supply chain emissions accounting processes, including in third-party tools such as life cycle assessment (LCA) products and databases
Participate in policy processes and initiatives linked to the development of improved emissions accounting of commodity supply chains, including regarding GHG Protocol, the Science Based Targets initiative, country or EU actions under the Paris Agreement, the Task Force for Climate-Related Financial Disclosure requirements and other public or private-sector initiatives
Develop partnerships with leading experts and practitioners working in this area to deliver robust science and ensure Trase’s work remains actionable and policy relevant
Present research and project results in meetings and international conferences
Support engagement activities related to this work and as part of the wider Trase impact strategy
Publish communication pieces, including blog posts, insights, policy briefs and peer-reviewed articles.

You will be part of the newly established Water, Coasts and Ocean (WCO) Team, where you will contribute to building the team’s portfolio of work within governance of water and coastal utilities and infrastructure, including on three or four ongoing projects depending on skills:
sWASH & grow explores innovation mechanisms for increasing uptake of water innovation in light of climate change and humanitarian crises.
Gridless initiative explores the policies and regulations for offshore water and energy solutions globally.
Geopolitics of the Blue Economy analyses regional marine cooperation and geopolitical implications from marine activities.
RISK-SEC explores local climate change adaptation to water security challenges in Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands.

Key duties and responsibilities
Intellectual leadership
Lead intellectual development of research, including conceptual and methodological development within the area of governance and innovation for water and coastal utilities.
Ensure that research results and outputs are solutions-oriented and focused on needs of high relevance to SEI’s mandate, in particular agenda setting and decision-making.
Ensure strong portfolio of publications every year, including peer-reviewed academic journals, alongside regular forms of research communications.
Design appropriate methods for addressing research questions, including desk-based research such as systematic literature reviews, qualitative methodologies such as Delphi approaches or ethnographic research and participatory and co-creation methodologies. Can handle relevant tools and software for coding and analysis of data.

Fundraising
Identify new funding opportunities and build relationships with key funders.
Lead and support preparation of new project proposals for fundraising in collaboration with the WCO Team, coordinate individuals during the proposal and execution of projects, ensure timely and high-quality delivery of results and collaborate with external project partners.
Secure long-term research funding support for yourself and colleagues.

Policy and communications
Establish, build and engage in strategic partnerships and networks with multi-stakeholders, including government officials, think tanks, universities, research institutes, private sector and civil society, to implement policy and promoting evidence-based decision-making related to environmentally sustainable development in Sweden and globally.

Support the Team Lead to manage WCO’s strategy, operations and budget management across projects.

Who you are
If you are a Research Fellow, you bring expertise in a field of research of relevance to the position. You are expected to initiate and lead creative and strategic research and produce high-quality analytical outputs. You are able to lead projects and regularly take responsibility for policy impact and interactions with stakeholders. You hold a proven capacity to work in a multidisciplinary team and policy environments and with international partners. Research Fellows hold PhDs or possess equivalent research abilities and experiences. Over time, they maintain a high level of self-funding, either individually or as part of teams.
If you are a Senior Research Fellow, you are a recognized scientific leader in a relevant area. You initiate and lead creative and strategic research and produce high-quality analytical outputs. PhD and at least 2 years’ experience – or MsC and at least 8 years’ experience – in fields related to socio-technical innovation, multilevel governance, water utilities, integrated coastal governance, offshore infrastructure or blue economy.

Trase (Transparency for Sustainable Economies) is a pioneering sustainability data and intelligence initiative that reveals the connections between consumers, producers and investors, as well as the environmental and social impacts linked to global supply chains. The Trase approach draws on vast sets of production, trade, customs and financial data, for the first time laying bare the flows of globally traded commodities – such as palm oil, soya and beef – at scale, as well as the flows of capital used to finance this trade. Trase is a direct response to the ambitious commitments made by leaders across sectors to achieve deforestation-free supply chains – and the urgent need this creates for a breakthrough in assessing and monitoring sustainability performance. Trase is jointly led by SEI and Global Canopy with many additional partners and close collaborators. The Trase team is made up of over 30 individuals, located in nine countries, brought together by enthusiasm, curiosity and drive.
The role
You will be part of a leading, multinational, multidisciplinary and multilingual team of experts, working across the Trase initiative. You will work as a key member of the Trase Data Observatory – which focuses on democratizing access to the Trase data – by helping model, analyse and query Trase data, as well as providing tools that can improve how target users access and engage with Trase data and actionable insights. You will also play a supporting role in the Trase Data Tools team focused on maintaining the Trase master database and pipeline for processing trade and supply chain data. We are now recruiting a Research Fellow focusing on sanitation and gender. The position presents an opportunity to join an internationally leading research institute and contribute to a growing and dynamic research environment. As part of the Sanitation and Health Team within the Resources, Rights and Development Division, the Research Fellow will take a leadership role in SEI’s work in sanitation and gender, which is expected to continue to expand and develop. As part of this work, there will be opportunities to engage with projects across SEI’s portfolio of research with SEI centres around the world. A key focus of this role is further developing our programme of work related to health and development.
The project portfolio includes a Formas-funded research project developing tools for measuring women’s empowerment in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), including field studies and theoretical work. The role will also contribute to research and policy engagement activities in Bolivia WATCH – or WASH Thinking Connected to Hydrology – a Sida-funded project that aims to connect watershed management with WASH.
Under SEI Strategy 2020–24, this role corresponds to Impact Areas: Improved Health and Well-being and Sustainable Resource Use and Resilient Ecosystems and focuses on numerous Priorities for Change, including sanitation solutions that are sustainable, healthy and productive are widely scaled up, city planning that improves well-being and environmental health and safer and more effective waste management and circular systems. Meeting these priorities will require new efforts and a deepened focus on topic areas such as gender equality, social equity and poverty, planetary health and approaches for transformative WASH.
Key duties and responsibilities
Contribute to ongoing theoretical and empirical research on women’s empowerment in the WASH sector, including case studies making connections to health, livelihoods and wellbeing (Formas-funded project)
Contribute to research and policy engagement activities in Bolivia WATCH
Represent SEI and contribute to policy engagement in water and sanitation networks (SuSanA annual meeting, World Water Week, Sanitation and Water for All)
Design research plans, such as developing research questions and data collection tools (questionnaires, household surveys, interview guides) and conduct training and field visits (when travel is possible)

Who you are
We are looking for a person with a passion for empowerment and transformative approaches to development, particularly focused in the WASH sector. This may be from a range of expertise areas such as development studies, geography, public/global health, sustainability science or similar. Applicants with a strong research and policy engagement background related to water and sanitation, gender equality and social equity, and/or global health are encouraged to apply.
In addition, you also have experience of developing new ideas for research and pursuing these with a range of Swedish and/or international funders. The role
Transitioning to a sustainable food system is essential for tackling the most pressing environmental issues of today. The CANDIES project examines how digital information is used along food supply chains, including in relation to consumer behaviour, transparency, environmental impact assessment and traceability. The project started late 2019 and will run until 2023. We are now looking to strengthen the team with a Research Fellow to lead research activities on sustainable food consumption, with an interest in behavioural change and the systemic and structural factors that influence consumption.
Key duties and responsibilities
Lead research into sustainable food consumption
Undertake quantitative and qualitative data collection on food consumption, with analysis, presentation and communication of research results
Participate in transdisciplinary research projects on sustainable consumption and production of food
Oversee work done by junior colleagues related to these topics

The role
SEI is recruiting a highly motivated Research Associate to work on the quantitative elements of several sustainable consumption and production projects. These projects gather data from a variety of sources to calculate environmental footprints at different scales.
Several Swedish municipalities have set ambitious targets to reduce consumption-based environmental pressures, but often lack the data and tools they need to identify suitable policies to meet targets or monitor progress. At the same time, Sweden’s goal to become a fossil-free welfare society with net-zero emissions by 2045 calls for a deep reconfiguration of social systems. Transitioning to a fossil-free society will require changes in current consumption patterns and levels across different sectors such as food, transport and housing. The impact on citizens will vary across socio-economic demographics as well as gender and place of residence.
In this role, the Research Associate will undertake quantitative data collection and analysis on these research topics, contributing to a better understanding of environmental footprints and potential impacts of future changes to inform policy and decision-making.
Key duties and responsibilities
Work with medium-sized/large data sets, including socio-economic data for each postcode in Sweden, household energy data, car ownership data, access to services, national economic accounts data and environmental data such as carbon dioxide emissions and environmentally extended input-output model calculations, to calculate carbon footprints and analyse results.
Analyse, visualize and map consumption-based emissions inventory and socio-economic data.
Support the development of an online individual carbon footprint calculator and data analysis of over 600 000 responses.
Work as part of team to develop and carry out research activities with appropriate research techniques and methods, including desk-based and primary data collection, quantitative approaches and analysis and interpretation of research results.

Additional responsibilities
Support and lead publications in peer-reviewed journals, communications and outreach products such as discussion papers, policy briefs, blogs and op-eds.
Participate in design and implementation of new projects, including concept note development and proposal writing.
Contribute to organization of events and meetings and represent SEI at external events.

Transitioning to a sustainable food system is essential for tackling some of the most pressing environmental issues of today. The CANDIES project examines how digital information is used along food supply chains, including in relation to consumer behavior, transparency, environmental impact assessment and traceability. The project started late 2019 and will run until 2023. We are now looking to strengthen the team with a Research Fellow to lead research activities on the sustainability and digitalization of the Swedish food supply chain.

Trase is a data-driven transparency initiative that is revolutionizing our understanding of the trade and financing of commodities driving deforestation worldwide. Trase is jointly led by SEI and Global Canopy, with many additional partners and close collaborators. The Trase team is made up of over 25 individuals, of which approximately half are employed by SEI, located in nine countries and brought together by enthusiasm, curiosity and drive to help solve one of the biggest environmental challenges of our time. Trase’s unique supply chain mapping approach brings together disparate, publicly available data to connect consumer markets to deforestation and other impacts on the ground.
Trase’s freely available online tools (trase.earth) and actionable intelligence enable companies, financial institutions, governments and civil society organizations to take practical steps to address deforestation. The Trase approach draws on vast sets of production, trade, customs and financial data, for the first time laying bare the flows of globally-traded commodities – such as palm oil, soy and beef – at scale (supplychains.trase.earth), as well as the flows of capital used to finance this trade (trase.finance). Trase is a direct response to the ambitious commitments made by leaders across sectors to achieve deforestation-free supply chains and the urgent need this creates for a breakthrough in assessing and monitoring sustainability performance.
SEI HQ is recruiting a highly motivated Research Fellow to work on a new project, TraseH2O, within the Trase initiative in collaboration with the Stockholm Resilience Centre. The successful applicant will have a strong background in water science with experience in water accounting, water footprinting and modelling with focus on crops and livestock.
TraseH2O aims to investigate trade-offs between water use, deforestation and greenhouse gas (GhG) emissions associated with Brazilian soy and beef commodity exports. The project will bring water resources into the Trase offering alongside the already available trade information, deforestation risk and GhG emissions from deforestation risk. TraseH2O focuses specifically on water use for agriculture and livestock in Brazil, as well as the trade-offs between land and water use for agricultural production, including the interplay between deforestation, irrigation and moisture recycling. You will be part of a leading multinational, multidisciplinary and multilingual team of experts, working across the Trase initiative while also delivering on an exciting and fun project! Research Fellow in Sustainable Finance
SEI is seeking to make a strategic recruitment in the area of sustainable finance. SEI has a track-record of working with international climate and development finance and hosts the Stockholm Sustainable Finance Centre (SSFC) in partnership with the Stockholm School of Economics. The mandate of the SSFC is to support the shift in capital away from unstainable economic activity and the scaling of investment into sustainable economic activity needed to achieve the Paris climate targets and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Our sustainable finance portfolio of projects focus on mapping of development finance flows, policy support for international climate finance institutions, research on private sector sustainable finance instruments and practices (e.g. labelled bonds), and supporting training for developing and emerging market banks on sustainable finance practices. In developing country contexts our recent work has focused on the emergence of sustainable finance instruments in Africa, the alignment of development finance institution investments and national SDG priorities, and the role of private insurance for local climate resilience. SEI has a long track record of developing tools to support actors in their sustainable development objectives. Among these are the Trase Finance platform that tracks financing related to deforestation risks and AidAtlas that visualises development aid flows and their uses.
The role
The Research Fellow will take a leadership role in SEI’s work in sustainable finance, which is expected to continue to expand and develop. As part of this work, the Research Fellow will have opportunities to engage with projects across SEI’s portfolio of research with SEI centres around the world. A key focus of this role is further developing the SSFC’s programme of research, with a particular focus on developing and emerging markets. The RF will also take a leadership role in SSFC’s engagement with relevant financial actors, decision makers and sustainable development institutions. Acquiring, archiving, organizing and processing large datasets on production, trade and different measures of environment and social impact and sustainability performance (both spatial and non-spatial data)
Supporting the update and maintenance of the Trase database and data releases, including quality assurance protocols
Supporting ongoing efforts to improve and expand Trase in new countries and commodities using data from government sources, company websites, NGOs and collaborating research groups, including through the development and deployment of in-house software to map supply chains

SEI is the host of the secretariats of two networks: Swedish International Agricultural Network (SIANI), Swedish Development Research Network (SweDev) and and one learning consortium: Agriculture for Food Security2030 (AgriFoSe).
The Network Coordinator will support the three secretariats based at SEI HQ in Stockholm. The main part of the work (70%) is to support the SIANI secretariat to develop a stream of work on the topic of rural youth as well as supporting the secretariat with communication and administration tasks. Within AgriFoSe2030 (15%) the position entails communicating and translating science to policymakers and practitioners. Within SweDev (10%) the coordinator is expected to support the overall coordination of the SweDev network through engaging with stakeholders as well as organizing events and seminars.
The Network Coordinator will be based at SEI HQ in Stockholm and work in collaboration with colleagues at several Swedish Universities. The Network Coordinator will be a part of the Resources and Development Unit under the leadership of Janet Vähämäki.
Key duties and responsibilities include
Network development through interacting with Swedish- and international stakeholders
Coordination of events and other activities
Web-based communication
Develop and implement the youth workstream within SIANI

Who you are
We are looking for a person with a great interest in rural development, who has experience coordinating network activities and who is familiar with the UN’s Sustainable Development Agenda. You should also be self-motivated, enjoy outreach and engagement work, working in remote teams and be open to a wide range of work tasks.
Formal qualifications and experience
A Master’s degree related to sustainable agriculture, forestry, rural development, food systems or development
Experience of working or studying in a low-income country or other international work
Experience in working with youth issues
Experience of working and communicating with a variety of interest groups, networks, and stakeholders
Experience of using multiple communication channels professionally (both digital and non-digital)
Experience of project coordination
Fluency in both written and spoken Swedish and English

Personal skills required in the position
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Enjoys and is comfortable with organizing workshops and online seminars
Has a positive influence on the attitudes of individuals and teams
Capable of providing and receiving feedback in a constructive and respectful manner

Ideally, the candidate will also bring:
Experience of stakeholder engagement
Experience in science communication and/or research
Knowledge of any other UN languages
Experience with running a website
