Backend Engineer – Digital Enterprise (HR & Finance)
At Stegra, we are building a next-generation steel plant - and digital capabilities are a core part of how we operate, optimize, and scale our operations.
We believe the best digital solutions are created close to the business, by teams who understand both the context and the technology. Our teams work cross-functionally to build solutions that are scalable, maintainable, and create real value.
We are now looking for a Backend Engineer to join our Digital Domain supporting HR and Finance.
What you’ll do
In this role, you will be part of a cross-functional team within our Digital Enterprise function, working closely with both business and technical colleagues.
Your day-to-day work will include:
Developing and maintain backend services that enable reliable HR and Finance operations

Designing APIs and integrations that enable reliable and scalable communication between systems

Working with both synchronous and asynchronous patterns, including event-driven approaches where relevant

Contributing to how services are structured, interact, and evolve over time

Collaborating with HR and Finance stakeholders to understand needs and turn them into working solutions

Breaking down problems into clear technical components and development tasks

Ensuring that security, data protection, and access control are embedded in the solutions we build

How we work
Modular, microservice-based architecture

Combination of well-designed APIs and event-driven integrations

Integration treated as a core capability

Systems designed to evolve and be replaceable over time

Iterative development - delivering early and improving continuously

We make use of modern tools, including AI-assisted development, while placing strong emphasis on understanding problems, making sound technical decisions, and building solutions that work in practice.
What you’ll bring
A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience
A few years of experience in backend development
Experience working with APIs and/or microservice-based systems
Interest in how systems are designed and how components interact over time
Familiarity with asynchronous patterns (events, messaging, queues)
Ability to break down complex problems into structured technical solutions
Comfortable working directly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Interest in understanding business processes and how digital solutions support them

Meriting:
Experience with Kotlin / Spring or similar
Experience with cloud, DevOps practices, or CI/CD
Experience working with testing, monitoring, or production systems

How you will grow
We believe the best engineers don’t work in silos. While your core will be backend, you’ll have the opportunity to understand and contribute across the full stack - from data to frontend - and to take increasing responsibility for how services are designed, interact, and evolve over time, supported by experienced colleagues in each area.
Benefits at Stegra
At Stegra, you’ll join a company where your work has real impact on the climate, the industry, and future generations. We’re building a culture rooted in safety, trust, and inclusion, where people feel supported to grow and thrive.
You’ll receive fair, competitive compensation aligned with collective agreements, along with benefits like up to 30 days of paid vacation, occupational pension, parental benefits, and insurance. If you need support with relocation or immigration, our relocation department will help guide you through the process, whether it’s permits, housing or other practical matters. You can also enjoy perks like subsidized gym memberships and bike leases, plus the everyday benefits of life closer to nature.

We are building a next-generation steel plant - and data is a core part of how we operate, optimize, and scale. We believe the best data solutions are created close to the business, by teams who understand both the context and the technology. We are now looking for a Data Engineer to join our Digital Domain supporting Finance and HR. In this role, you will work at the intersection of business and technology - helping shape how data is modeled, shared, and used to drive decisions across the organization. You will be part of a cross-functional team where business experts, analysts, and developers collaborate closely.
Together, you will build data products that are reliable, understandable, and designed to be reused across the company - not just for a single use case. At the same time, you will contribute to how we build our data platform and ways of working. We aim to continuously evolve - adapting to new technologies, improving how we design data, and staying aligned with modern best practices. You will also take a leading role in facilitating the data platform roadmap - aligning needs across domains, shaping priorities, and ensuring progress on key initiatives.
Responsibilities:
Design, build, and maintain data pipelines and products that enable Finance and HR to make reliable, data-driven decisions
Work closely with business stakeholders and analysts to translate needs into scalable data models and solutions
Help structure and expose data so it is consistent, understandable, and reusable across domains · Take an active role in improving how we work with data across teams - leading and driving improvements to platform capabilities, standards, and patterns
Enable self-service use of data by making it accessible and usable beyond engineering teams
Make thoughtful trade-offs in how data is designed and delivered - balancing batch vs near-real-time, handling historical data, and shaping metrics and semantics for usability
Define and promote best practices for data quality, testing, documentation, and access control
Explore how modern tooling, including AI-assisted development, can improve how we build, test, and maintain data products
Support and coach colleagues in modern data engineering practices

What you’ll bring
You enjoy solving real problems and are motivated by building data solutions that are actually used. You are curious about how data platforms should be designed — and how those designs need to evolve as technology and business needs change.
We believe you bring many of the following:
Several years of experience in data engineering or modern data platform development
Experience building end-to-end data solutions (ingestion, storage, transformation, consumption)
Interest in contributing beyond your immediate team — shaping shared ways of working, standards, and platform capabilities
Strong skills and experience modeling data for analytical use
Experience with cloud-based data platforms and infrastructure-as-code
Knowledge of engineering practices such as CI/CD, testing, and code review
Ability to make sound technical decisions without being tied to specific tools or vendors
Interest in areas such as self-service analytics, semantic modeling, temporal data, and data governance
Experience working closely with business stakeholders, analysts, or operational teams
Strong communication skills and ability to explain technical solutions clearly

Nice to have:
Experience with, or interest in, industrial/operational (OT) data and how data from physical processes can be used for analytics and optimization

Benefits at Stegra
At Stegra, you’ll join a company where your work has real impact on the climate, the industry, and future generations. We’re building a culture rooted in safety, trust, and inclusion, where people feel supported to grow and thrive.
Here’s what makes this role unique:
Breadth, not silos: You’ll work across multiple technical areas - data, architecture, infrastructure and backend - gaining deep understanding of our digital ecosystem.
Ownership from day one: You’ll support a specific domain and act as a bridge between operations and tech, and drive solutions all the way from need to implementation and iteration.
Close to the action: You’ll collaborate closely with stakeholders, understand their workflows, and ensure your digital solutions create real value in their day-to-day operations.
