Position Description
Greenavance Tech Global AB (GAT) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher within a WISE-funded industrial research project focused on advanced materials for sustainable battery value chains. The position is hosted by GAT as the industrial employer and is carried out in close collaboration with Lund University.
The project aims to develop and optimize processes for producing cathode-relevant metal oxides and oxyhydroxides from recycling streams. Targeted applications for the produced materials include:
Precursors for cathode active materials (CAM)
Functional coating materials for nickel-rich cathodes



Key Responsibilities
Design, execution, and documentation of experiments using both synthetic and real recycling process solutions.
Control and optimization of particle size, morphology, and crystal structure.
Synthesis of CAM precursors and coating materials, including lithiation and post-treatment steps.
Advanced materials characterization using techniques such as SEM, XRD, ICP-OES/MS, and particle size distribution analysis.
Assembly and electrochemical testing of coin cells for performance validation.
Sustainability assessment of developed processes, including evaluation of water use, by-products, energy consumption, and safety aspects.
Active collaboration with academic partners at Lund University and contribution to scientific publications, reports, and project dissemination.



Required Qualifications
PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Metallurgy, or a closely related field, completed or to be completed by the start date.
Documented experience in battery materials, battery recycling, hydrometallurgy, or materials synthesis.
Strong experimental background and demonstrated ability to work independently in an industrial R&D environment.
Proven experience with quality control (QC), data validation, and analytical method development, including calibration, uncertainty assessment, and interpretation of materials characterization data.
Good written and spoken English.



Merits
Hands-on experience with lithium-ion battery recycling streams.
Experience with CAM synthesis, surface coatings, or electrochemical testing of battery materials.

The team you will be joining currently consists of 11 members and is responsible for measuring physical properties such as thermal and electrical characteristics. This often involves developing methods to enable measurements under specific conditions. One growing area is the development of testing methodologies for evaluating high-power electrical contacts for the automotive industry; another involves the evaluation of graphene sensors. Projects vary in size and duration—from small assignments lasting a week to long-term projects spanning 5–10 years.

The job
In this position, your main responsibilities include development of new materials and production processes in collaboration with others. What you need to succeed!
We’re looking for someone with a PhD degree and/or extensive experience in a relevant field such as Materials Science or Materials Engineering. A background within metallic, ceramic, or composite materials is advantageous, as is previous experience with cemented carbide materials and/or powder metallurgy processes. Jernkontoret bedriver gemensam forskning inom 15 teknikområden (TO), vilka är en form av fristående föreningar med företag som medlemmar. Som Forskningschef ansvarar du för verksamheten inom ett antal teknikområden. OM TJÄNSTEN

Som R&D ingenjör hos vår kund kommer du att vara en viktig del av deras R&D-team och arbeta med den fortsatta utvecklingen inom sintring. Du kommer att utveckla befintliga metoder/procedurer inom ditt eget område, bland annat sintring av pulver och thermoanalys. Du kommer även att lösa vanligast förekommande problem utan betydande tillsyn/stöd från andra och förebygga, belysa och mildra EHS-risker på din egna arbetsplats.

Utrustning som kommer att användas för labbarbetet inkluderar sintringsugnar, masspektrometrar och dilatometer.
Kemikalier som kommer att hanteras och användas i laboratoriet inkluderar syror, baser, lösningsmedel, även gaser (stänga och öppna en regulator till exempel). Men hantering av kemikalier är en liten del av arbetet, det mesta av arbetet består av styrning av utrustningen.

About the job
In this position, you perform material analysis of hard metal using XRD. You apply measurement and analysis methods already developed and have the possibility to be part of method development activities. Maintenance of the lab and our equipment is an important part of the daily work. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) for image analysis is also included in your tasks. Together with us, you actively work to support our R&D function in delivering relevant data for the development of new materials for the future – spanning a wide range from our raw powders to finalized inserts and grades. Collaboration within our team of R&D engineers and technicians, as well as with other departments, is central to our success and you bring an inclusive and knowledge-sharing mindset to the team.

We have one of our R&D sites in Västberga (Stockholm) and this is also where you are be located.

About you
We are looking for a driven, structured R&D professional with a positive and service-minded attitude. Strong social skills are highly valued as communication and collaboration with colleagues, both within and outside the department, are really important. You truly enjoy to discuss and solve problems, and to use your technical skills for maintenance of analysis equipment. Through analytical and methodical ways of working, you also make sure results of high quality are delivered on time.

You hold at least a bachelor’s degree or corresponding working experience - most likely within Physics, Chemistry, Materials Technology or similar - while a master’s degree is highly valued. Basic knowledge and experience of X-Ray Diffraction, including use of equipment and analysis software connected to this area, is required. Previous work experience of method development, maintenance of lab equipment as well as skills in SEM for image analysis are advantageous. Since we work locally in a global setting, you have good knowledge in both Swedish and English, and any other language skills could come in handy.

Som R&D ingenjör arbetar du med analytisk kemi i vårt labb. Det innebär att du undersöker, analyserar och utvärderar material inom hårdmetallbearbetning - så som pulver och andra råmaterial - och du granskar kritiskt de resultat som framkommer för att se om det går att använda i vår forskning eller i produktionen. I ditt dagliga arbete använder du dig av relevanta instrument och system och du administrerar information i vår databas. Du beställer kemikalier, förbrukningsmaterial och servicearbeten och du utför även själv visst underhåll av våra instrument. Du samarbetar med andra labb runt om i världen och har även nära kontakter med våra produktionsenheter i Gimo och Westminster (USA).

I vår verksamhet arbetar vi mycket med metodutveckling och vårt mål är att uppfylla krav kring kvalitet och ledtider. Vi jobbar ofta i projektform och det finns stora möjligheter för dig att driva egna kunskapsprojekt inom hårdmetall när du kommit in i rollen.

Din profil
Vi söker dig som har grundläggande kunskaper inom analytisk kemi eller materialkemi, och ett intresse för att fördjupa dig inom området hårdmetall. Vi tror också att du har en fallenhet för projektarbete och metodutveckling. Du kan med fördel komma direkt från en avslutad utbildning som exempelvis högskole/civilingenjör och du har goda IT-kunskaper. R&D Hard Materials is a development center for hard materials; investigating their use in rock drilling applications. Our field covers a broad range of materials development technology, and we’re now looking to complement our research team with a driven and competent R&D Engineer. Your mission
As R&D Engineer, your main responsibilities include the development of new materials and production processes, as well as material properties and component testing technologies. We work primarily with the development and improvement of cemented carbide, while other hard materials also are of interest. You work primarily in project form, as part of a team consisting of development engineers and technicians, while reporting to the team manager.


Your character
We’re looking for someone with a PhD in Materials Science, Materials Engineering or Physics. A background within metallic, ceramic, or composite materials is a strong advantage; as is previous experience with cemented carbide materials and/or powder metallurgy processes. As we operate in a global setting, you need to be fluent in English, both verbally and in writing.
