Vacancy: 2 postdocs to the Anthropocene Laboratory
The Anthropocene Laboratory is a new programme at the Academy, that started in 2023. The aim is to develop scientific understanding and synthesis of the Anthropocene biosphere, by working across the sciences and the humanities, engage with actors outside of academia to stimulate change, and help foster a new generation of transdisciplinary sustainability scientists. The laboratory is hiring multiple staff to achieve these functions. Located in Stockholm, Sweden, the laboratory will consist of researchers and facilitators, with a director reporting to the Secretary General of the Academy, guided by a Scientific Committee.

The laboratory intends to build and recruit a dynamic, diverse and collaborative team with an ability to work across scientific disciplines and between science and practice. One of its main functions will be to bring together international scholars that combine disciplinary perspectives and diverse skills, tools, and competencies for a more holistic understanding of the Anthropocene biosphere, our home on planet Earth, thereby exploring challenges and opportunities of advancing science for sustainability in an era of increased interconnectivity, social-ecological turbulence, and inequalities.
The laboratory will work closely with several Stockholm-based organizations engaged in sustainability, including the Stockholm Resilience Centre at Stockholm University, the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics and the Global Economic Dynamics and the Biosphere Academy Program at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
We are looking for colleagues with an international and interdisciplinary interest, with documented experience in understanding and relating to the Anthropocene biosphere, and with a willingness to explore emergence in new scientific constellations. The laboratory strives to experiment, with the hope to discover new systemic interactions.
We are committed to diversity, equity, and representation – not because it looks good on paper but because it is essential for an ability to comprehend and engage with the Anthropocene.
We are recruiting a core team to develop the first phase of the laboratory (2023–2025). The laboratory’s working language is English, with all additional languages regarded as assets.
Post doc 1 and 2 – Full time position for two years
The positions
Post docs are the main scientific engines of the Anthropocene Laboratory. You will work closely with the Director, the Chair of the Scientific Committee, as well as advisors and mentors. Your main tasks will be to lead academic papers, based on ideas developed collaboratively in international workshops that you help organise. You will be offered an opportunity to co-design a range of activities (scientific synthesis, multi-stakeholder experiments, teaching, training, and public engagement with diverse stakeholders) supported by international, leading expertise from the natural and social sciences, and the humanities.
You have likely recently finished your academic degree in a sustainability-related field and are now interested in exploring the complexities of the Anthropocene biosphere. This post doc will accelerate your scientific career and will help you build capacities, knowledge and networks for a future with a leading academic institution, or elsewhere. We are specifically looking for post docs with an interest in one of two major topics:
“The intertwined biosphere” – you will help develop an understanding of the many ways that people are part of, are shaped by, and shape the biosphere, the thin layer of life of which humans are part. You will primarily work with data and colleagues from the natural and social science to develop a comprehensive synthesis of the interconnected conditions for humanity and life on Earth.
“The empirics of hope” – you will help develop an understanding of the ways that society has changed since the “Great acceleration” and explore human and social progress and innovation – across regions and systems. You will primarily work with data and colleagues from the social sciences and humanities to develop a comprehensive synthesis of positive change towards a sustainable future.

Your qualifications
You have a PhD and you are highly motivated. In your application, please specify which topic is of key interest, what ideas you would be especially keen to explore, and what skills and experience you can leverage towards it. Provide a description of why you consider yourself suitable for this position. We are interested to learn more about how you work in teams and your ability to work independently. Please provide examples of how you express curiosity and your capacity to innovate, while striving towards set goals.
In addition, please provide examples of the following expectations for this position: You communicate clearly and effectively – in writing and verbally. You have a demonstrated ability to work across academic disciplines and to facilitate dialogues and learning across knowledge systems. You enjoy data analysis as well as reading and writing scientific papers. You know what it takes to publish in leading scientific journals. Post docs will be evaluated after year 1 in relation to documented ability to lead scientific processes, effectively work in teams and willingness to cross scientific boundaries. Risk taking will be more essential than achieving traditional academic results, but the ability to advance scientific findings and insights into publications is key. Please let us know if you have specific connections to a discipline, method, place, region, institution, language, plant, animal, or system.
Application
We look forward to your application! In your application, please make sure to clearly specify which of the positions you are applying for.

Vacancy: Postdoc on dynamics of interconnected crises in the global economy and the environment
The programme Global Economic Dynamics and the Biosphere (GEDB) is advertising up to two 2-year postdoc positions, on the topic of understanding how multiple shocks (social, economic, and environmental) combine to create global systemic crises. Of special interest is the mediating role of human-environment interactions and how shocks are transferred, absorbed, and linked together across space, time and sectors of society.

The postdoc(s) will focus on applying, combining, and developing new methods to empirically answer these questions. To achieve these goals, you will work with an interdisciplinary team of scientists based at GEDB and at our collaborating partners in Sweden and abroad. As the topic is highly interdisciplinary, we will welcome applications from candidates from a diversity of disciplinary and methodological backgrounds including, but not limited to, the computational social sciences and digital humanities.
Background to the call
The Anthropocene is characterised by rapid global environmental and social change with evidence of increasing frequencies of shocks to highly connected sectors of society. These shocks interact to reveal underlying vulnerabilities in national and global systems. Recent examples of these dynamics include the years from the great recession to the Arab uprising and refugee crises, and most recently the combination of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine threatening to create a global food security crisis.
This new landscape of interconnected crises emphasises the importance of understanding how components of the global system absorb, transmit and link together social and ecological shocks. However, there is a lack of empirical methods to study these questions. This postdoc will aim to develop such methods and apply them to test theories of global system dynamics and resilience under multiple crises. This will likely entail combining a diverse set of methods and data sources in innovative ways.
Qualifications
Applicants should be able to demonstrate a track record in research, including publications.
Selection of eligible candidates will be based on:
experience of working with highly interdisciplinary topics, including those related to the topic area of this position
demonstrated academic outputs in the form of scientific publications
willingness and ability to work as part of a transdisciplinary team
communication and presentation skills
good written and spoken English skills (Swedish is not a requirement).
the applicants personal references

Experience in handling both quantitative and qualitative data is valued (but not mandatory).
Terms of employment
The term of the initial contract is two years with conditional extension of contract depending on evaluation of academic outputs.
Please note that selection decisions cannot be appealed.
Application
NOTE: consolidate your documents into ONE SINGLE pdf – multiple documents will not be accepted, and make sure you include the reference ‘GEDB Biodiversity’ in the title.
Please include the following information with your application:
Your contact details and personal data
Your highest degree
Your language skills
Contact details for 2–3 references (NOTE: do not include reference letters.)
Cover letter, describing what makes you suitable for the project in question
CV – degrees and other completed courses, work experience and a list of degree projects/theses/publications
Research proposal (no more than 1 page) describing:
why you are interested in the field/project described in the advertisement
why and how you might choose to complete the project
Degree certificates and grades confirming that you meet the general and specific entry requirements.

Send your application as a single pdf document to: GEDB_appl@kva.se with subject ‘Crises postdoc’
Closing date: March 15th, 2022.
It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the application is complete in accordance with the instructions in the job advertisement, and that it is submitted no later than the closing date. If you are selected for interview you will be asked to provide electronic copies of three of your most relevant works (degree projects or published articles) and letters of reference.

Forskningsprogrammet Global Economic Dynamics and the Biosphere (GEDB) vid Kungl.

Tasks and Qualifications
We are currently looking for several research assistants with a Bachelor’s, or Master’s Degree to help us advance a range of new research initiatives. The work will be distributed across the various research activities of GEDB, focusing on finance and global health in the context of global environmental change. Therefore applicants should be prepared to combine multiple tasks of possibly varying nature. We are looking for candidates with strong analytical skills (primarily quantitative, including R programming or similar). Documented experiences in finance, global health, or epidemiology will be particularly valued, but are not essential.
The assistants will work closely with our team of interdisciplinary researchers to compile literature (scientific and “grey” literature), identify, amass, and analyse relevant data and summarise important work related to the specific topic in focus. The assistants may also be required to help organise, and participate in, international workshops. Assistants can expect to often be part of the full research process, and as such the RA positions within GEDB should be seen as an excellent opportunity to gather research experience for candidates interested in an academic future.
