Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?
The Petter Brodin’s research group located at Science for Life Laboratory in Stockholm is a part of the Unit of Clinical Pediatrics, Karolinska Institutet.

The group develops and applies experimental and computational research methods for systems-level analyses of human immune systems. The aim of the team is to understand immune systems’ variation in health and disease and the regulatory mechanisms underlying such variation and adaptation to environmental influences. Another important focus is the development of immune systems in early Life.

Your mission
The responsibilities of this candidate in the lab will mainly involve sample reception, processing and recording the sample/subject metadata in the database, buffer exchange procedures, conjugation of antibodies to metal isotopes that are used as probes in mass cytometry, continuous testing and development of new metal probes, antibody test-titration experiments by CyTOF and flow cytometry, high-throughput acquisition of samples by CyTOF, following the routines established in the CyTOF facility for the maintenance of CyTOF machines and performing any other immunology research lab-related tasks. Good organizational skills, meticulousness and experience of managing large sample repositories and patient databases is absolutely critical.

Your profile
The successful candidate should have experience in a lab with sample handling, reagent preparation, experimentation and experience of method development with iterative testing and careful documentation. The successful candidate must be thriving in interdisciplinary environments, able and comfortable to work independently and should be dedicated to perform the tasks assigned in the lab free of errors. The candidate must be able to work together with other members of the team and contribute to the team’s concerted efforts. The candidate must have good communication skills in English as the team is multicultural and interdisciplinary. Prior experience on Mass cytometry and flow cytometry will be an important advantage. As the role demands someone with good experience in reagent preparation, buffers and testing probes based on metal isotopes, a chemical background will be a benefit.

A selection will be made among qualified applicants on the basis of the following criteria:

- Some documented experience in some of the aforementioned task areas.
- Prior experience and knowledge in biology and chemistry.
- Good exposure and knowledge on Mass spectroscopic technology.
- Expressed interest in the Project.

The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.

The Department is organized in 10 divisions: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Surgery, Neuropediatrics, Pediatric Oncology, Neonatology, Reproductive Endocrinology, Neuropsychiatry (KIND), Reproductive and Perinatal Health. The divisions have separate scientific profiles and vary in size and have several research groups, dealing with both basic and clinical science.

Division
This is a collaborative research project addressing the neurobiology of gender identity, sexual orientation, and effets of sex hormones on the brain.

The focus is on the perception of own body in the concept of self. The study will be conducted primarily at the Karolinska Institute (PI Professor Ivanka Savic) and partly at UCLA (PI Professor Jamie Feusner). Our team consists of physicians, physicists, engineers, neuroscientists, psychologists and biomedical experts, and our laboratories have expertise in functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging, PET, and psychophysics. We have MEG and TMS facilities. We have access to two state-of-the-art 3-Tesla MRI scanners (both sites), an EEG lab, and the latest generation of the PET scanner (Karolinska Institute and Hospital).

Duties
We are seeking a highly talented, innovative and enthusiastic researcher with a MD or degree in psychology cognitive science, computer science, engineering, biostatistics, and with experience of brain imaging (the latter is mandatory).

The ideal candidate will have expertise in cognitive neuroscience, human brain imaging (MRI), and insight in experimental psychology. The applicant should have experience in MRI acquisition and analysis, some programming skills (eg be familiar with FSL and SPM analyses of cortical thickness, DTI analyses and resting state fMRI analyses). Knowledge of basic statistics, and an appreciation of methodological issues in cognitive brain imaging is required. The applicant should be thorough, efficient, a good communicator, and enjoy working as part of a diverse, energetic, interdisciplinary team, and accept travels between the two sites. He/she should be able to manage several projects simultaneously, have strong verbal and written English skills. The applicant will be able to take advantage of the scientific skills at both sites, and will primarily be located at KI. This is a NIH supported study.

Entry requirements
The candidate is expected to work within the general framework of the research program and actively contribute to teaching and improving MR methodology, with respect to data post processing/analysis. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a consistently good academic record, including publications in peer-reviewed journals. Applicants are expected to have knowledge of post processing and analysis of MRI data. This includes functional connectivity and functional multivariate pattern analysis; analyses of structural connectivity and computational morphometry; and gene-brain interactions.

The position is for up to 1 year or as agreed. Applicants with a foreign exam are welcome

Application process
The application is to be submitted on the Varbi system.
